PROBLEM ANALYSIS

Our client needed a tool for data collection and study for their project for the reduction of child malnutrition in Guatemala.

Before implementing this project, our client had worked all of the information using some software tools that, while allowing him to effectively collect the data, did not provide a way to keep a historical record of the condition of each child over time, which involved a huge work load for collecting, organizing, analyzing and delivering results.

OUR SOLUTION

After analyzing the client's problem, then our goal was focused on solving the problems and improving data collection flow and analysis.

Considering our client's needs, we implemented the solution in two parts:

  • • A web application for data visualization, download and analysis
  • • A mobile application for work staff in field, where the data is entered.

DATA COLLECTION

Due to the fact that data was collected in faraway communities, we needed to implement a mechanism that allowed us to save all data, including creating new records, and uploading pictures in site and then automatically synching with the central server as soon as the field technicians' devices have access to the Internet.

REPORTS

Our client's goal is to study the positive impact of its project on improving nutrition in the children they visit. For each child, the system provides a malnutrition diagnosis by adding data and it reports if the children have improved since their last measurement, all calculations are based in data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). All that data may be downloaded from the App for a more detailed analysis or may be checked directly in the Web.

Data

Data needed to study child malnutrition is child's age, weight, and height, and this information is compared with the data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). This data must be compared to determine malnutrition in a child and his or her improvement with time.

DATA ORGANIZATION

Since our client works in several communities in Guatemala, there were often misunderstandings regarding the names of the children or of the mothers involved in the project, as they were remarkably similar.

We decided to implement a solution in which each family was assigned to the department (political division), municipality, or community where they belong and with this information a record number was created for each one. The record number is exported to a QR code to make easier the data search in the Mobile App.

TRAINING TOOL

Each field technician that collects measurements is also responsible for training and family awareness. The Mobile App was designed as a training tool with user-friendly graphs, figures, and colors to enable data communication to the families.

FINDINGS

Working in this project allowed us to look into malnutrition problems in Guatemala. We are proud and very grateful for having had the opportunity to collaborate with Cáritas de Guatemala from our area of expertise in order to help improve the quality of life of the children in our country.
